Oldies good in Hoodies too
You may have noticed that more older people than usual were wearing hooded sweatshirts on 12 August.
The 'Goodie in a Hoodie' you see might also be an 'Oldie in a Hoodie' as older people show their support for young people.
"Age Concern supports New Zealand's Hoodie Day, as part of the UN International Youth Day today," Age Concern New Zealand national president Liz Baxendine says.
"Older people and young people have a lot in common. We both face stereotypes based on our age rather than our real achievements and outlook on life.
"Many older people enjoy time with grandchildren and mentoring other young people. We were all teenagers ourselves not too long ago."
"And many of us wear hoodies – they're practical and comfortable garments. I'm travelling this week, and I'll be certain to pack one to wear today," Liz Baxendine says.
As part of the NZ Aotearoa Adolescent Health and Development (NZAAHD) Hoodie Day, events are being held across New Zealand with funds raised being used to support people who work with youth. Age Concern is also marking Hoodie Day, encouraging local Age Concerns to hold their own events.
Ten per cent of Hoodie Day proceeds will be donated to Age Concern.
"We look forward to celebrating International Youth Day with people of all generations on Wednesday," Liz Baxendine says.
