Older people not being treated fairly by ACC
Age Concern called for changes allowing older claimants to receive New Zealand Superannuation in addition to their weekly compensation for lost income.
"People who continue to receive an income from work after reaching the New Zealand Superannuation qualification age are not asked to choose between that income and New Zealand Superannuation. Why then should a person who is entitled to weekly compensation - a payment made in lieu of income - be penalised by having to make that choice?" asks Age Concern.
Older people are also not receiving the social rehabilitation and treatment already provided for in the Act.
"Consultation with Age Concern Councils and with medical professionals has revealed that ...older people are being denied the kind of rehabilitation that younger claimants receive. As a result, older people who have suffered a personal injury are sometimes forced to move into residential care before time."
