Empowerment reaps rewards
William was living in a boarding house. His needs were not being met, his meals were inadequate, he was subjected to bullying and violence and his wellbeing was rapidly deteriorating.
Age Concern Kapiti was aware that William was not doing well in his accommodation, so our coordinator immediately began working with him. He told her he just wanted a bedroom of his own.
Our coordinator persevered with William’s GP, who initially resisted intervening, and he was referred for a needs assessment that found he was eligible for rest home care. William has settled in well at his new home.
Throughout this process our coordinator met William weekly, she was his support person when needed and says being able to help him has been the highlight of her career. William was inspiring in his resolve for a better life and we now hope others at the boarding house will follow his example.
