Wellbeing story

Fred and Joan have struggled with health issues for years and Joan is exhausted because of dealing with her own health decline and as a result of the added responsibilities she now faces with Fred's decline in health. Joan contacted Age Concern Whangarei to ask for help and was referred to our Field Coordinator who identified a need for the Dedicated Carer Relief Service (DCRS). This was duly set up with care to meet the needs and match the client with a staff member who had similar interests, particularly in music.
We sent our DCRS staff member, who is a male, to spend weekly time with the Carer's husband. This has brought great enjoyment into the Carer, Client and staff member's lives as the staff member brings his piano Accordion when visiting and he and the client have a "Jam" session together, with the client now playing his own keyboard piano which he had stopped doing due low mood and illness, his wife states. A third person has been invited sometimes into the home as well so the three have great fun and look forward to their time together.
The wife, who is the full time unpaid carer, has commented on the pleasure it has brought her, knowing her husband has male company and is getting joy from his music. She says the match between the Client and Staff member is a good fit as they have a lot in common and she herself feels a lot of relief from stress as a result of the service provided.
