Dr Helen Owen is the Assistant Research Fellow of the Prospective Older Adult Transport and Health Study (NZPATHS) exploring older adults’ driving behaviour, transport patterns and factors that support mobility pre- and post-driving cessation. Helen will be presenting as part of the NZPATHS symposium. Her presentation will explore the socio-demographic, health and transport characteristics of older current drivers who are actively planning for driving cessation. Older drivers who plan for cessation are more likely to have poorer health and lower driving confidence; however, cessation planning is uncommon amongst older drivers. Planning for cessation (e.g., moving closer to public transport and medical services) may help older adults maintain independence, mobility and wellbeing after they have stopped driving.
