Professor Vanessa Burholt was previously the Director of the Centre for Innovative Ageing (CIA) in the College of Human and Health Sciences at Swansea University, Wales, UK; Director of the pan-Wales Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research; and founder of the Institute of Creative Ageing Industries in Wales, UK. Vanessa’s research focuses on older people’s attachment to people and places and she has published on rurality, loneliness, support networks, intergenerational relationships, ethnicity and migration.

The “take-home” message of Vanessa’s keynote presentation, Technology Mediated Communication in Familial Relationships and its Influence on Isolation and Loneliness, is that unless family contact provided by technology-mediated communications meets the expectations of older people, loneliness will not be reduced.

Joey Ramone once sang into Vanessa’s stiletto on stage.
