Associate Professor Mansvelt’s research has centred on the relationships between ageing, consumption and place.  In this presentation she will be talking about Phase 1 of her current research based on interviews with older people living independently in the community. Preliminary data suggests that regardless of whether one celebrates Christmas, Christmas is a meaningful event through which a sense of self and social practices are formed.  Accordingly, it is important to understand the diverse ways in which the event configures people's emotions, activities, expectations and relationships.   Juliana herself loves Christmas and has long been fascinated by the impact of commercialisation on how the event is experienced.
