Social Cohesion

Age Concern New Zealand and our network of local Age Concerns have a strong interest in building social cohesion so that people of all ages live purposeful, safe, and connected lives. Our current submission builds on feedback we provided in October 2021.

The older population in Aotearoa is growing in numbers and diversity. Better Later Life He Oranga Kaumātua 2019 to 2034 estimates that by 2034 there will be 1.2 million New Zealanders aged 65 and above, approximately one fifth of the total population. The proportion of Asian, Māori, Pasifika, and Middle Eastern / Latin American / African older people is also expected to increase dramatically.

Older New Zealanders can experience age discrimination along with social exclusion based on their ethnicity, gender identity, or lack of digital literacy.

We are keen to contribute to any work that will create a vibrant, supportive, inclusive society in which New Zealanders of all ages can thrive.
